JURY VERDICT: NOT GUILTY
Mission Man Cleared of Kidnapping/Hostage Taking & Transporting
McAllen, Texas – A federal Jury cleared Ernesto Gaona-Gonzlez of transporting an undocumented immigrant, kidnapping her, and holding her hostage. The government called several federal agents to testify against Mr. Gaona-Gonzalez as well as a female immigrant who falsely accused Mr. Gaona-Gonzalez of holding her against her will. The Government attempted to use cellphone screenshots from another man to prove his guilt. Further, they called Federal Air Marshal Heriberto Reynolds to the stand to testify he overheard Mr. Gaona-Gonzalez attempt to extort cash in exchange for a woman’s release. Mr. Gaona-Gonzalez exercised his right to remain silent and did not testify in his own defense. The Jury did not agree with the government and acquitted Mr. Gaona-Gonzalez of all charges in the indictment – he faced 10 years to Life in prison. Carlos A. Cocaine Conspiracy
Dallas, Texas – A federal Jury cleared Roberto Leal of Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine. The government called two “cooperating” defendants who testified that Mr. Leal had supplied them with 10 kilos of cocaine found in their Dallas apartment. The Government attempted to use cell tower data and a recorded phone call between Mr. Leal and another man to prove his guilt. The Jury did not agree and acquitted Mr. Leal of the charges – he faced 10 years to Life in prison. Carlos A. García & Jaime Pena tried the case to verdict.
